Writing and Discussion Assignments

(Send your assignments for inclusion on this list to Edward J. Gallagher at ejg1@lehigh.edu.)

1) The Monticello Graveyard becomes a battleground in the controversy. Members of the Jefferson "black" family argue for the right to burial there. The "white" Jefferson family embodied in the Monticello Association resists. The situation is ripe for a role play discussion. Students are assigned to take a side and take turns arguing for or against admission of the Hemings descendants into the Monticello Association, ending in a "vote" on admission. Afterwards, the exercise would culminate with the students journaling and discussing what they learned from the exercise and what they observed about the reasons each side gave. What were the focal points that determined people's choices? (Edward Gallagher)
