According to Rasmussen and Tilton, "Glass no doubt conceived his painting to supplement Chapman's [1840] mural by providing an earlier, foundational event. His figures are cruder than those of Chapman but bear a noticeable resemblance to them." Glass saw more "than a teacher-student relationship in their sessions. Rolfe embraces Pocahontas, and neither's eyes are directed at the crucifix to which he gestures." For the wedding of Rolfe and Pocahontas, see Glass 1850.
